Winter Maintenance Tips
Posted by Sydney Selleck on Feb 4th 2025
Winter is here, and the colder temperatures can take a toll on both ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and EV vehicles. From icy roads to freezing mornings, your car needs a little extra care to keep running smoothly all season long. At Hyundai Shop, we’re here to help you prepare with these essential winter maintenance tips. Whether it’s checking your battery, topping off fluids, or ensuring your tires are winter-ready, a few simple steps can save you time, money, and stress. Stay safe and confident on the road this winter—let’s get your vehicle ready for the season ahead!
Inspect Tires & Tire Pressure
Winter tires or all-season tires with good tread are crucial for winter roads, especially for EV's, which are generally heavier than ICE vehicles
Check tire pressure regularly, as cold weather can cause it to drop
Ensure your tires have at least 4/32-inch tread depth for optimal grip
Check & Maintain Battery Life
Cold weather can reduce both non-EV battery performance as well as EV 12v battery performance.
Ensure the battery is fully charged and inspect it for corrosion or loose connections.
If your battery is over three years old, consider testing its strength or replacing it.
For EV drivers*
-
Monitor Battery Health: Devices like Bluetooth battery monitors can help track voltage levels in real time.
-
Software Updates: Check for any manufacturer-recommended software updates, as some address battery management issues.
Keep Fluids Topped Off
Use winter-grade windshield washer fluid to prevent freezing
Check your coolant/antifreeze level and mixture (typically a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze)
Regularly inspect oil levels and consider switching to a winter-grade oil if recommended by your manufacturer
Inspect & Replace Wipers
Wiper blades should be in good condition to handle snow and ice
Consider winter-specific wiper blades for better performance in extreme conditions
Keep an ice scraper and snow brush handy for clearing your windshield
Keep Your Gas Tank Half-Full
ICE vehicles require a fuller tank to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
When the tank is nearly empty, temperature changes can cause moisture to form inside, leading to water contamination in the fuel. This can dilute the gasoline and affect engine performance.
Keeping your gas tank at least half-full or keeping your EV's charged is also helpful in case you get stranded and need to keep the car running for heat.
Don’t let winter weather catch you off guard! Taking care of your vehicle now can help you avoid costly repairs and unexpected breakdowns later. At Hyundai Shop, we’re here to keep you safe and confident on the road all season long.
